90/10 Rule

Dream Big. Make it a habit. Don’t be afraid to be called a dreamer. There is nothing wrong with that label! People that call people “dreamers” with a sense of negative connotation are stating they have no dreams themselves. I can’t think of anything more disgraceful than that.
I like to think of people being in two categories. The 90/10 rule also comes into mind. Just as 10% of people they say make 90% of the wealth…I feel that 10% of people naturally think big. Those people are absolutely making the money and they are absolutely making things happen in this world.
With my experience in sales I noticed a common trait among successful business owners when selling marketing for instance. I could determine how successful their business was by putting them into one of these two categories. Small Thinker or Big Thinker. I would do this by using key words or phrases within my initial conversation with them.
I would use words like
- global
- expansion or I would ask them if ….
- doubling their inventory within in the next quarter would be a production problem.
Comments and questions like this will peak the immediate interest of a big thinker. They will listen and not think twice about giving you more of their time. A BIG thinker is always wanting to grow and interested in at least hearing about the opportunity you have for them. They will recognize you as a BIG thinker as well and immediately want to connect. It may be hard to believe but there are business owners that would be fearful of growth because they wouldn’t know what to do with it. They may find it overwhelming. This is how I see people in general. The Small Thinkers and the Big Thinkers.
Discover which category you fall into and decide to choose your words wisely if in fact you consider yourself the 10%. You’ll want to attract like minded individuals to further your goals and the words you use could very well scare them away.
Examples of small thinking words:
- can’t afford
- maybe
- hope
- waiting
- security
- risky
- “what if it doesn’t work?”
Examples of BIG Thinking words:
- plan
- goals
- change
- strategy
- global
- investments
- exciting
- results
