You must do the thing which you think you cannot do." -Eleanor Roosevelt

Learn How to Manage Up

Manage up? This may sound foreign to you but it is a phrase I found myself using quite often while working with a group of new employees in an orientation class.

I would ask the new employees why they left their last job and often you would hear things like:

  • My manager was not good at giving feedback
  • I was never praised
  • I was not able to get a straight answer from my supervisor
  • I felt like a number and it was not a friendly relationship
  • I wanted to advance and no one told what to do to get promoted

These comments sparked me to change my approach in equipping people to get out of the victim mentality. We are only in charge of one real thing in life and that is our attitude. Our attitude feeds our actions, our actions feed our outcomes!

I began turning the concept around to new people and giving them permission and techniques to go get what they desired. For example if you have a supervisor who is not great at praising you, then go praise the supervisor. Of course it needs to be specific and sincere and be relevant to situations and circumstances.

What this does is plants a seed in the mind of the supervisor and has the opportunity to germinate and usually in most cases the supervisor begins to reciprocate. This is the law of sowing and reaping.

I used this same principle and applied it to many areas and began to get feedback about its success with many people and found that something these simple changes departments and had effect on turnover.  We incorporated it into the standard orientation process and it was the number one thing liked by all new employees because they felt empowered to get what they desired!
