Pilot or Coach

Life Coaching has been growing in popularity by leaps and bounds. I have been asked by many what it takes to be a life coach. My answer might surprise you.
I respond that it is like being an air plane pilot. Many people have a belief that to be a pilot you learn just a few things from the classroom and then practice in the cock pit and then after a few hours you are now a pilot.
Yes I over simplify that description because most know it takes many hours of study and practice in an outlined curriculum to be ready to handle almost any situation that occurs in flight. Then as the pilot flies the plane they do not just push the auto-pilot button and sit back and drink coffee.
They are constantly making course adjustments to get to the desired destination. It is a very interactive process. A pilot takes the responsibility for the safety of all on board!
Coaching is exactly the same in my opinion. A good coach is constantly looking at the situation and making course adjustments to get to the desired change and goals. In the airline world you have the FAA screening and certifying pilots, but in the coaching world anyone can call themselves coach.
In my opinion it carries the same level of responsibility. You are in charge of helping people achieve change and success as they put their trust in you and become vulnerable.
I suggest you should search out and interview a few coaches. Ask them:
- Why they chose coaching as a profession
- Find out what other things have they done in the past
- How did they determined they were ready for helping others
I have had people tell me they should be a coach because all of their friends come to them and they give them advice. This in my opinion is not coaching, it is friendship. Friendship is great but if you want free advice, be ready for the results you get with it as well.
If you really desire to make changes and achieve a new level of success then interview and find the right coach.
A good coach has a solid understanding of people and human behaviors and leads you to discover the answers and changes you desire.
Be leery of a coach who has all the answers and likes to give you all the answers. No coach has all the answers and if they understand human behavior they know that when a person discovers the answer for themselves it solidifies the learning and allows change to take hold!
